Since science says that humans evolved from animals, do spirits evolve in a similar way?
Spirits evolve in a similar way but there are differences. Animal evolution is not always linear, There are branches in the evolutionary tree and sometimes these branches terminate with the extinction of a species. The Spirit evolution path does not have the variance that the animal evolutionary path has. Spirit evolution or advancement is always forward or upward depending how one visualizes it. The journey can be slow or fast depending on the free will choices that the spirit makes but although it may remain stationary for periods of time along the path, it never goes backwards. Everyone will reach the path’s endpoint.
